Best Bras for Big Busts, and How Your Size Carries Over to Swimwear

A desk review of the best bras for big busts: Elomi, Freya and Panache by need, how to measure, UK to US cup sizes, and how a full bust bra size carries to swim.

Best Bras for Big Busts, and How Your Size Carries Over to Swimwear

For most full-bust shoppers on a 32 band or larger, Elomi is the place to start. Its size guide runs bands 32 to 48 and cups D to KK in UK letters. Freya covers smaller backs, from a 28 band. Whichever you buy, one rule decides the fit: the band carries the weight, the straps only stabilise. That rule shapes every pick in this guide to the best bras for big busts.

How this review was done

This is a desk review, not a wear test. Every range below comes from a brand’s own size guide or product pages. Nobody on our side was measured, ordered a size, or wore these bras for this article. This guide is not for readers under a D cup, whose sizes most mainstream brands already cover. It is also not a wear test: if you need a verdict on how a bra holds its shape after months of washing, we did not test that.

Where a brand did not publish a figure, or we could not confirm one from the brand itself, the table says so. We left prices out because we could not verify current prices across regions. Verdicts are labeled as brand-stated or as our editorial judgement.

We name brands and the construction to look for, not single styles. Individual bras are recolored and discontinued often, and a style can carry a narrower size range than its brand. Check the product page of the exact style before you order.

How to know your real bra size

Two measurements decide it.

  • Underbust: measure snugly around your ribcage, directly under the breasts. This sets your band.
  • Bust: measure loosely around the fullest part, with the tape level across your back.
  • The difference between the two sets your cup letter.

Each brand turns that difference into a letter on its own chart. Use the chart of the brand you are buying from, not a generic calculator. Our guide to measuring yourself for swimwear walks through the tape position step by step. The same two numbers work for bras.

Cup letters also change across the Atlantic. The UK brands in this guide use UK lettering. Here is how those letters read in US sizing:

UK cupUS cup
EDDD
FG
FFH
GI
GGJ
HK
HHL
JM
JJN
KO

A UK G cup is a US I cup. That single mismatch explains many failed online orders.

What makes a bra work above a D cup

Above a D cup, the bra is a load-bearing structure. These are the parts that do the work, in order of importance.

A firm, level band. The Research Group in Breast Health at the University of Portsmouth says straps “are not the main support.” The band should sit level and firm, with no more than about a five centimeter gap. If the band rides up at the back, it is too loose, and the straps are doing a job they were not built for.

Encased underwire. The wire should sit on your ribcage, behind the breast tissue, not on it. The casing (the fabric channel around the wire) stops the wire working through after washing.

Multi-part cups. A cup cut from three or more pieces can be shaped to hold more volume than a single molded piece. Seams lift and direct tissue forward instead of letting it spread.

Wide straps. Wider straps spread the remaining load and dig in less, but their job is to stabilize the cup, not to lift it. If they leave grooves, the band is the problem.

Side support. A panel or sling inside the cup, along the outer edge, moves tissue forward and in. It also keeps the wire from sitting on the side of the breast.

The best bras for big busts, by need

Best everyday bra for a G cup: Elomi

Published range (brand-stated): Elomi’s size guide runs bands 32 to 48 and cups D to KK in UK letters. A UK G cup sits near the middle of that range.

Construction to check: For daily wear at a G cup, look for a full-cup or balcony style with multi-part cups, encased wire, and an inner side panel. Check the product page for a wide, multi-hook band. A wider band spreads the load over more of your back.

Limitation: The band stops at 32. A 28 or 30 band will not find a size here.

Best for: a G cup on a 32 band or larger who wants one everyday bra that holds its shape from morning to evening.

Best strapless bra for a full bust: Freya

Published range (brand-stated): Freya’s size guide runs bands 28 to 44. For strapless styles, check the individual product page for the cup range of the specific style you’re considering.

Why Freya (editorial judgement): A strapless bra has no straps to fall back on, so the band does all the work. That makes a small band size more important here than anywhere else. Freya’s range starts at 28, which gives a narrow-backed, full-busted shopper a real option.

Construction to check: Look for a wide band with silicone grip along the top and bottom edges. Look for boning at the side seams to stop the cups folding. A cup with a firm frame holds better than a soft, unstructured one.

Limitation: Strapless styles often stop short of a brand’s full cup range. Freya’s 28 to 44 band range does not mean every strapless style runs that wide. Check the style’s own size list.

Best for: a small band with a full bust that needs a strapless bra for a dress.

Best sports bra for a big bust: Panache

Published range (brand-stated): Panache’s UK site lists its wired sports bras in B to J cups (UK letters). Its US site lists B to M (US letters), the same ceiling, since a US M is a UK J. Neither page publishes a band range.

Construction to check: Look for an underwired, encapsulated style; Panache describes these as wired sports bras; encapsulation is not stated on its category page. Encapsulation holds each breast in its own cup, while compression presses both against the chest. Above a D cup, compression alone tends to flatten without controlling movement (editorial judgement). Look for wide, padded straps and a band that does not slide when you lift your arms.

Limitation: Panache publishes the cup range but not the band range on its sports bra pages, so check your band on the product page before you order.

Best for: running, gym classes, and anything high-impact, where an encapsulated cup with a wire beats a pull-on crop top.

The blank-looking cells are deliberate. Brands rarely publish strap width as a number, and we will not estimate a cup ceiling or a price we cannot check. A table that guessed would be quoted as fact.

What goes wrong, why, and the fix

The band rides up at the back. The band is too loose, so the straps are carrying the weight. Go down a band size and up a cup to keep the same volume.

The wire sits on the side of the breast. The cup is too small, or the wire is too narrow for your root. Go up a cup, or try a style with a side panel.

The center gore will not lie flat. The gore is the part of the frame between the cups. If it floats away from your sternum, the cups are too small.

The top of the cup gapes. This usually points to a shape mismatch rather than a size error. Your tissue may sit lower in the cup. Try a balcony if a plunge gapes, or a plunge if a full cup does.

The straps dig in. The band is not doing its job. Shortening the straps hides the symptom and makes the shoulder pain worse.

How your bra size carries over to swimwear

Swim brands split into two camps, and your bra size only carries over cleanly to one of them.

Bra-sized swim brands sell tops by band and cup, like a bra. Fantasie’s swim range runs bands 30 to 44 and cups D to J in UK letters. The J cup is only offered in the 32 to 40 bands. Panache’s swim pages are less consistent. Its UK page says “up to J cup” and its US page says “up to N cup,” which is a UK JJ. The two pages disagree by one cup, so ask Panache before ordering at the top of its range.

Dress-sized swim brands sell tops in letter or dress sizes, sometimes with a note on cup fit. Brands in this category typically map their letter sizes to bust and underbust measurements, and Monday Swimwear’s fit guide lists its own size range and measurements. It gives each top a cup note, such as “designed to best fit cup sizes A-G” for the Aruba Top. A cup note is guidance across a size, not a band-and-cup fit.

Some brands sit in both camps. CUUP sells bras in band-and-cup sizes, but its swim tops use CUUP’s own Adaptive Swim Sizing, with 23 sizes. Your CUUP bra size does not translate directly to a CUUP swim size.

Why a brand’s bra range is often wider than its swim range (editorial judgement): swim is made in prints that change every season. Each print has to be produced in every size, so brands trim the extremes. Swim fabric and lining also have to hold up wet, which is harder to engineer at the top cup sizes. If your bra size sits at a brand’s ceiling, expect its swim to stop short.

For picks built around that problem, our guide to the best swimwear for large busts covers swim by fit case.

Sister sizes

A sister size keeps the same cup volume on a different band. Bravissimo puts the rule plainly: “if you go up a cup size, go down a back size.” Its chain runs 40DD = 38E = 36F = 34FF = 32G = 30GG. This is useful when a brand does not stock your exact size. A sister size shifts load; it does not fix fit. Going up a band to reach a cup puts more weight on the straps, which is the failure this whole guide is trying to avoid.

FAQ

What is the best bra for a big bust?

For a 32 band or larger, start with Elomi, whose size guide runs to a UK KK cup. For a 28 or 30 band, start with Freya, whose bands begin at 28. Both choices come from the brands’ published ranges, not a wear test.

Is a DD cup a big bust?

Most full-bust specialists start their ranges at a D, as Elomi does. Cup letter alone does not describe size, because a 30DD and a 40DD hold very different volumes.

Should the straps or the band hold the weight?

The band should hold the weight. The University of Portsmouth Research Group in Breast Health says straps are not the main support. If your straps leave grooves, your band is too loose.

Is my bra size the same as my swim size?

Only with a bra-sized swim brand, and even then the range may stop sooner. Dress-sized brands use letter sizes with a cup note. CUUP uses a separate 23-size swim system.

What is a UK G cup in US sizes?

A UK G cup is a US I cup. UK and US letters match up to DD and then split, so a UK F is a US G. Always check which lettering a brand’s chart uses.

Before you order swim

You now have a bra size you trust. The next decision is which swim brands will accept it as it is, and which will make you translate it. Read our swim size conversion chart before you place a swim order.
