Best Swimwear for Large Busts: Support Starts at the Band
Fantasie is the best swimwear for large busts for most readers who wear a DD cup or larger. It sizes swim by band and cup, publishes bands from 30 to 44 and cups from D to J in UK letters, and states where that grid stops. If your band is 28, start with Freya, which sizes swim by band and cup from a 28 band, or Monday Swimwear’s S/L size: its Small Band Large Cup page lists it for a 28 to 34 inch underbust in DD to G, in three tops only. If you need a UK JJ, Panache’s US page lists cups up to N (UK JJ), one cup past its UK page.
How we built this list
This is a desk review. Every figure comes from a brand’s own size guide, product page, or fit guide, checked in September and October 2026. We did not order, wear, or wash any of these suits, and no one was measured into them.
Where a brand does not publish a figure, we say “not published.” Where two of a brand’s own pages disagree, we report both. The ranking is editorial judgment. It rests on how completely each brand documents its band and cup sizing, and how wide that sizing runs.
For brand-level cup ceilings, see our ranking of swimwear brands for a full bust. This page is organized by fit case instead.
Why support comes from the band
The University of Portsmouth Research Group in Breast Health studies bra fit and breast support. Its guidance says shoulder straps “are not the main support,” which leaves the band to do that work. The group advises that the band should sit level around the body and feel firm. Pulled away from your back, it should leave a gap of no more than about five centimeters, roughly two inches.
That has a direct consequence for swimwear. Most fashion swim is sold in dress sizes. In a dress-sized top, the band and cup grow together. If you need more cup, you size up, and the band grows with it. The band then rides up your back, the straps take the weight, and your shoulders ache by lunch.
Band-and-cup sizing separates the two. You can buy a 32 band with a G cup, a combination no dress size can express. For that reason, this list ranks brands by how they size the band and cup rather than by how the suits look.
What to look for in full bust swimwear
- Band-and-cup sizing, or a split size. A label like 32G or S/L means the brand sized the band separately from the cup. A plain M does not.
- A stated lettering system. UK and US cup letters split after DD: UK E is US DDD, F is G, FF is H, G is I, GG is J, H is K, HH is L, J is M, JJ is N, and K is O. A “G cup” means two different volumes depending on the country.
- Your band, not just your cup. A brand that reaches J may not offer J in your band.
- A per-style cup rating. A brand-wide ceiling hides the fact that many styles stop lower.
- Structure under the cup. An underwire or firm band anchors the cup. A tie-back depends on how tightly you knot it.
- The return window. You are buying a fit you cannot try on.
If you have not measured recently, our guide to how to measure for swimwear covers band and bust measurements.
The best swimwear for large busts, by fit case
1. Fantasie: best for a 32 to 40 band up to a UK J cup
Fantasie is a lingerie-derived brand, and its swim follows bra sizing. Fantasie’s swim size guide, reached through Fantasie’s website, lists bands 30 to 44 and cups D to J in UK letters. In US letters that is D to M.
- Cups: D to J UK (D to M US)
- Bands: 30 to 44
- Construction: band-and-cup sized throughout. We did not verify wire or cup type style by style.
- Limitation: the grid has gaps. There is no 28 band. J cups come only in 32 to 40 bands, and the largest cup in a 42 band is GG.
It ranks first because it is the most complete published grid here, and it shows where the grid ends. A reader who wears a 42H can see before ordering that the size does not exist, instead of finding out from a return.
Best for: a 32 to 40 band up to a UK J cup, or a 30, 42 or 44 band below J, who wants to order by bra size.
2. Panache: best for cups past J
Panache also sizes swim by band and cup, though the range is worth confirming on the site for your region. Panache’s UK site, at panache-lingerie.com, describes its swim as “up to J cup.” If you’re shopping in the US, check the size charts on Panache’s US site for the range offered there. US and UK cup letters don’t line up one-to-one (US N converts to UK JJ, for example), so read each chart in its own lettering.
- Cups: up to J (UK site), or up to N US / JJ UK (US site)
- Bands: could not be verified
- Construction: band-and-cup sized. Wire and cup type were not verified per style.
- Limitation: we cannot tell you which ceiling is correct, or which bands carry the largest cups. Check the individual style’s size list before you order.
Best for: a JJ UK reader for whom Fantasie’s J ceiling is one cup short, and who will check sizes style by style.
3. Monday Swimwear S/L: best for a small band with a large cup
Monday Swimwear is a fashion brand. Monday Swimwear sells nine sizes: PP, P, S, S/L, M, L, V, VV, and VVV. S/L is a split size the brand calls “Small Band Large Cup.” Its Small Band Large Cup page says S/L fits a 28 to 34 inch underbust in a DD to G cup. Each S/L product page lists the bra sizes it fits, “depending on your breast shape”: 28E, 28F, 28G, 30E, 30F, 30G, 32DD, 32E, 34D, and 34DD. The fit guide’s general size table shows a narrower S/L underbust of 28 to 29 inches, so go by the product page’s list. It is sold in three underwire tops only: Cala Roja, Sorrento, and Clovelly.
- Cups: D to G across the ten S/L bra sizes listed on the product pages. Monday labels its model sizes in US letters on those pages (for example “34DDD (US)”), and both its fit guide and its cup-size collections use the US-only letter DDD. Read Monday’s letters as US: a Monday G is a UK F.
- Bands: 28 to 34 inch underbust in S/L
- Construction: underwire in all three S/L tops.
- Fit guide versus S/L: Monday’s fit guide rates the Cala Roja A to E and the Clovelly B to E. Those ratings describe the regular sizes. The S/L size carries its own list of fits, and that list is the same on all three tops.
- Limitation: only three styles. The rest of the range is dress-sized, so the band-first logic above applies to those styles: sizing up for cup also sizes up the band.
- Cup range by style: Monday’s fit guide rates seven tops to G, including the Sorrento, Malibu, Morocco, and Tulum. Because the cup ceiling varies by top, check the fit guide entry for the specific style before you order.
It ranks third because the S/L size solves a specific problem well, but it covers a narrow slice of bodies and three styles.
Best for: an underbust of 28 to 34 inches in a DD to G cup, especially a 28 band that Fantasie does not make.
4. PrimaDonna: best for a full-bust one-piece in a C to I cup
PrimaDonna is a lingerie brand with a swim line. PrimaDonna’s website lists swim tops from B to I and swimsuits from C to I.
- Cups: tops B to I, swimsuits C to I
- Bands: not published
- Construction: could not be verified style by style
- Limitation: PrimaDonna does not publish its lettering system. UK sizing has no I cup, so the letter is not a UK one. PrimaDonna’s own US conversion page lists its I as a US I, which is a UK G. Its swim pages do not repeat that, so confirm with the brand before you order.
It ranks fourth because the one-piece range is useful, and the missing lettering system is a real ordering risk. Ask customer service which system applies before you buy.
Best for: a reader who wants a one-piece rather than separates, and who will confirm the cup letter with the brand first.
5. Aerie: best if you are exactly a DD
Aerie’s own size chart lists bikini tops from 30A to 38DD.
- Cups: A to DD. UK and US letters are identical up to DD, so the lettering system does not change the answer here.
- Bands: 30 to 38
- Construction: could not be verified per style
- Limitation: DD is Aerie’s ceiling and the floor of this list. If you are between DD and E, or your DD band is 28 or 40, Aerie has nothing for you.
Best for: a 30 to 38 band in a DD cup who wants a mass-market price point and has no need to size above DD.
Bra size to swim size, for the brands covered
Find your UK bra size in the left column. Each cell shows whether that brand publishes a size for it. Monday’s S/L is sized by underbust measurement, so its cells refer to the tape measure, not the band number.
| Your bra size (UK) | US equivalent | Fantasie | Panache | Monday S/L | Aerie bikini tops |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 28F | 28G | No 28 band | Band range not verified | Yes, if underbust is 28-34” | No, bands start at 30 |
| 34DD | 34DD | Yes | Check style; bands not verified | Yes, if underbust is 28-34” | Yes |
| 38J | 38M | Yes (J in 32-40 only) | Within “up to J” on both sites; band not verified | No, above G | No, above DD |
| 42H | 42K | No, 42 band stops at GG | Band not verified | No, above G | No |
| 34JJ | 34N | No, above J | US site only (“up to N”) | No, above G | No |

Common fit problems and how to fix them
The band rides up your back. The band is too loose, so the straps carry the weight. Portsmouth’s five centimeter test catches this before you swim. The fix is a smaller band. Bravissimo’s fitting advice, on Bravissimo’s website, puts the rule simply: “if you go up a cup size, go down a back size.” A 36F that rides up becomes a 34FF. We could not verify Bravissimo’s own swim size range, so we cite the rule, not the range.
The straps dig into your shoulders. This is the same problem seen from the front. Tightening the straps adds pressure without adding support, so the fix is again to go down a band.
The wire sits on breast tissue at the side. The cup is too small, even if the band fits. Go up one cup letter and keep the band.
The cup gapes at the top. The cup is too big, or its shape does not match yours. A demi or plunge cut may sit closer than a full cup. Check the brand’s style notes, because cup shape varies by style within a brand.
You ordered the right letter in the wrong system. A UK reader who orders a US G gets a UK F. Convert first, using the list in “What to look for” above.
Your bust and hips are different sizes. A one-piece forces one size on both. Buy separates, and size the top by band and cup and the bottom by hip.
A tie-back loosens in the water. Ties depend on your knot. If you wear a tie-back, retie it after you get out of the water. If the band slips all day, a band-and-cup style with a hook closure is the better buy.
Who this list is not for
This list is not for readers under a D cup. Up to DD, UK and US letters match, and most fashion brands size cleanly in that range, as Aerie’s 30A to 38DD grid shows. The band-first principle still applies to you, since a smaller band with a larger cup still beats a dress size that is too loose. But you have far more choice, and the fit problems above are less severe.
It is also not a test report. If you want a verdict on wet opacity, chlorine resistance, or how a cup holds shape after a season, this page cannot give you one. We did not test those things.
FAQ
Should I wear my bra size in swimwear?
Yes, if the brand sizes swim by band and cup, as Fantasie and Panache do. If the brand uses dress sizes, your bra size does not translate directly. Use that brand’s size chart and its per-style cup rating instead.
Is a UK G cup the same as a US G cup?
No. UK G converts to US I, and US G converts to UK F. The two systems match up to DD and split after it, so always check which system a brand uses.
Do I need an underwire swim top for a large bust?
Not always, but you need a firm band. Portsmouth’s research group says straps are not the main support and the band should sit level and firm. An underwire helps anchor the cup to that band, and wire-free tops depend more on a well-fitted band.
Can a halter top support a DD+ bust?
A halter alone puts the weight on your neck. Portsmouth says straps “are not the main support,” and a halter is a strap. Choose a halter only if it also has a firm band underneath.
What if my band is 28?
Fantasie does not make a 28 band. Freya sizes swim by band and cup from a 28 band, though its own pages disagree on the cup ceiling. Monday Swimwear’s S/L size fits a 28 to 34 inch underbust in DD to G cups, in three underwire tops. Panache’s band range could not be verified, so check its individual styles.
Before you order
Begin with your band: measure it, confirm it against the brand’s own chart, and convert your cup letter into the system that brand uses. Then pick from the fit case that matches your band and cup, not from the photos. For a side-by-side of UK, US, EU, and AU sizes across more brands, read our swim size conversion chart.
